Travel Diary: Cusco, Machu Picchu & Rainbow Mountain + Traffic Jam Weekend Linky Party #197

9:51 PM

I went to Cusco a few weeks ago with my best friend and had a blast! It is such an old city, full of history, culture and beautiful sites. We spent a few days in Cusco, visiting the different parts of Sacred Valley, prior to going on our 4-day Salkantay trek. It was the toughest hike I've ever done in my entire life, but wow, was the experience worth it. Check out some of my favorite parts of the trip below:

Chinchero Ruins (part of Sacred Valley)

Concentric Circles in Moray

This was very cool to visit. Another site within Sacred Valley, we saw these concentric circles out in a field. We learned that the temperature at the top of the biggest circle compared to the smallest circle in the bottom is 15 degrees Fahrenheit hotter. This means that the Incas created micro climates on each ring and were able to grow different crops at each level.

Salt Mines in Maras

The salt mines were so cool to see! This is how the current villagers get their salt even today. There were around 200 salt pools. Water will evaporate from these pools and leave salt deposits for someone to mine. The light color of the pool signifies it is ready to be mined.

Day 1 of Trek: Hike to Lake Humantay

Day 2 of Trek: Salkantay Mountain

Day 4 of Trek: Machu Picchu

View of Machu Picchu from Wayna Picchu Mountain

I sat here for a good half an hour just looking down at Machu Picchu. It was so peaceful to just look around you and soak in the absolute beauty. I was in awe then and am still in awe of this Wonder of the World.

Rainbow Mountain

I was really disappointed in Rainbow Mountain. The pictures on Instagram are highly filtered - the colors really aren't that bright. It was still a cool experience to see. What really hit me hard was the fact that these mountains were once snow capped mountains. With climate change, the snow melted and that's how we get to see the beautiful striations today.

Peru is known for their fresh juices. We tried an orange, strawberry and mango juice!

I've had so much delicious arroz con mariscos and tuna tartare.

Catacombs in Cusco

Bye bye Peru! I'll miss you!
