What to do in Mykonos in October

8:30 AM

My second leg in Greece was to Mykonos. I was so excited to come here after hearing about the lively nightclubs. If you didn't know already, Mykonos is known as the "party" island. They have a lot of bars/nightclubs that come to life after 11 pm. Though that's what the island is most known for, there is much more to Mykonos, especially during the day. Check out some of my recommended sites/spots to explore while in Mykonos below.

What to do in Mykonos

Matoyianni Street/Little Venice

Mykonos Town is the heart of the island. It's close to the port, there are a ton of restaurants in the area, especially along the water and bunch of little shops lined on the streets. Matoyianni Street has high-end, luxury shops that you might be familiar with: Cartier, Louis Vuitton, etc. The other streets have shops as well, but they're smaller, local shops. It's a mix of locally-made clothing or home decor and souvenir shops. Take an afternoon to walk around and shop. You'll find something for everyone, I promise!

Little Venice is another quaint area of town. It has one of the best views of the island and is very close to the windmills (which I mention below). The views of the water are really pretty. Find a restaurant along the water, grab dinner and watch the beautiful sunset.

Windmills of Kato Mili

Beautiful windmills near the water that are just a quick walk away from the Old Port of Mykonos. I recommend exploring them during the day as you're walking through Little Venice. They're really a sight to see.

Delos Ruins Tour

Delos Island is only half an hour away from Mykonos Island by boat. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its' significance in Greek culture and history. Apollo is said to have been born on this island. I recommend signing up for a half-day tour ($70). It was extremely helpful to have a guide explain the history of the island, how it flourished in its' time and what led to its' downfall. The tour will also give you access to the museum, which preserves artifacts/ruins from the island.

The Food - Gyro and Souvlaki

I don't think I've eaten that much meat before. The platters in Mykonos are quite filling and so worth the price you pay. I recommend going to Snack Bar and Sakis Grill House. Prices were very reasonable and as you can see in the photos below, you get a ton of food. The gyro at Sakis Grill House is amazing and tends to sell out by the late in the night. Snack Bar is amazing too and they're open until really late at night, so it's the perfect after party snack.

Sakis Grill House

Weather-wise in early October is nice during the day - high 60s/low 70s, but it does get really chilly at night. I recommend packing a jacket with you for the chilly nights. The other thing I noticed was how windy the island was. I'm talking about 25-30 mph winds, not just a light breeze. Bring a hair tie with you because your great hair day will be ruined. Trust me, it happened to me!

What do you think? Are you ready to visit Mykonos? Don't forget to visit my Athens post as well. I recommend visiting a few different places/islands to really take advantage of your trip in Greece.
