What to do in Athens, Greece in October

8:30 AM

I went to Greece in early October for my honeymoon and LOVED it. Athens was the last leg on our trip and we had about a day and a half to spend here. Though October is off-peak season for Greece, there is still a lot to do, especially since Athens is a bustling city. If you only have about a day or two to spend in Athens, check out my recommendations for what to do in Athens!

Historical Sites & Ruins

Athens is so rich in history and culture. The Acropolis ruins sit on top of a hill overlooking the city. I recommend going on an Athens Full Day Tour, which will take you to all the sites and give you a bit of a history lesson while you're there. If you decide to go on your own, that is totally fine too! There is a ticket that allows you access to all the sites and it costs 30 euros. The ticket to visit Acropolis, which includes the Parthenon, already costs 20 euro. For just 10 euro more, you can access the Olympian Temple, Hadrian's Library, Temple of Athena, Ancient Agora and many more. Well worth it if you plan on seeing more than Acropolis. Here are some photos from these beautiful sites:

Museums

There are a ton of museums in Athens as well. All of the artifacts, paintings, sculptures, etc from the ruins are preserved in two museums: Acropolis Museum and National Archeological Museum. I highly recommend visiting both, they're both quite different in content. You can easily spend 2 hours in each museum. Acropolis Museum is right at the bottom of Acropolis, it's an easy stop after visiting the ruins. The National Archeological Museum is about a mile and a half away - it's approximately a 30 minute walk, but it's easily accessible through the metro. Entrance fee is pretty reasonable at both places: it costs 5 euro at Acropolis Museum and 10 euro at the Archeological Museum.

I loved seeing the Acropolis ruins and learning about the history of it all. I also visited Mykonos and Santorini during my trip - check those posts out if you plan on going as well!
